The Healing Power of a Paw
In life, as we embark on new chapters or journeys, we often think about all the things we need to put in place to make that new chapter a good and comfortable one—especially when it comes to relocating to a new country or place. Eight years ago, when I migrated to the United States, the one question everyone who knew me kept asking was, “Are you going to take your little dachshund pup, Bella, with you?” There was never any doubt in my mind that I was bringing my then eight-month-old pup with me. I only had her for about seven months, but she had already become such an important part of my life.
Migrating came with many personal challenges. In fact, those challenges became some of the most significant and defining moments of my life—moments where perseverance and strength were built. There were many days when even leaving the house for fresh air required great effort. But because I had my pup with me, I knew I had to step outside. Bella needed me, and in many ways, I needed her even more.
Bella was there for me through every trial. Her tiny paw resting against me and her little wet nose pressed against my cheeks were sometimes just enough to help me get through the challenges of the day.
The love of a pet is often underestimated, especially when it comes to our mental health. Animals provide a kind of unconditional support that is pure and judgment-free. They don’t ask questions, they don’t criticize, and they don’t leave when times get hard. Their presence alone can ease feelings of anxiety and emotional exhaustion.
The simple routines that come with caring for a pet—feeding them, walking them, and being present with them—can gently bring light into even the heaviest days. For me, Bella became more than just a companion—she became comfort, motivation, and emotional healing wrapped into one small, loving soul.
Flash forward eight years later, and Bella is still my little lifeline. She still waits for me to get home, just as she always has. In her own quiet way, she shows how much she cares—following me from room to room, resting beside me, and watching me with those loving eyes that seem to understand more than words ever could.
The highlight of my day is knowing Bella is home waiting for me. No matter how stressful, overwhelming, or exhausting the day may be, there is comfort in knowing that I am walking back into the unconditional love of an Animal.
Mental health journeys are not always loud or obvious. Sometimes they are silent battles fought behind closed doors. Sometimes healing doesn’t come from grand solutions—it comes from small, consistent moments of comfort.
Bella gave me that comfort. She gave me routine when I felt lost, companionship when I felt alone, and warmth when I felt emotionally drained. Bella’s pawprints are not only on the floors of my home but forever on my heart.
While I once thought I was the one rescuing her, the truth is… she rescued me.
I will never regret bringing Bella along with me. Even though finding “pet-friendly” housing came with its challenges, my home can never be completed without her. Sometimes healing doesn’t come only in the form of words or medicine—it can come through connection, responsibility, and unconditional love. For me, that healing came through Bella.
